Critique of Vanishing Point Contact Sheet (6 Photos)

1. Which photo is the strongest of the 4? What drew your attention to that photo? Where is the vanishing point?

Photo number 3 is the strongest picture. The whole aesthetic of the photo, with the color and location, portrays a warm feeling. In the background is the vanishing point, the viewer’s eye is lead there with no ending.

2. What type of depth does it have (small/shallow OR large/deep). Is the main subject of the photo evident?

This image has a large depth of field. Because of the vanishing point, there isn’t a main subject. The sidewalk and trees lead the viewer, and could serve as a subject.

3. What do you see as the most innovative and creative aspects of the photo? (Did he/she capture an interesting angle? Eye catching light, contrast, dynamic colors, or textures?)

I think that the dynamic colors and angle of the photo makes it creative. By highlighting both the sidewalk and trees to guide the viewer to the vanishing point, there are two main lines that stand out. The overall vision for the picture is quite enjoyable and pleasant to look at.

4. Did the photographer follow composition techniques like the rule of thirds, depth of field, and/or high/low angle. If not, were the rules broken successfully (does the picture still look good)?

The photographer was able to break rules successfully. The photo looks good because of the way the angle and lighting comes together. It is a very eye catching photo because of this.

5. Do elements like emphasis and/or lines take your the eye around the whole image? Explain how and give an example.

Both the sidewalk and trees guide the viewer to the background of the photo. They are two examples of actual line that add to the image. They lead to the vanishing point which is clear in this photo.
